Introduction to Focusing 4 Week Course
Learn the gentle art of this deeply embodied listening practice
“Focusing is a process of listening to your body in a gentle accepting way and hearing the messages that your inner self is sending you. It is a process of honouring the wisdom that you have inside you and becoming aware of the subtle level of knowing that speaks to you through your body”. Ann Wiser Cornell
Focusing is a transformative process that stems from the philosophy of Eugene Gendlin. Gendlin believed that everything in life is constantly evolving and in motion, including ourselves. This understanding forms the foundation of focusing, which serves as a means of healing and personal growth. Focusing is a skill that anyone can acquire, allowing them to change their relationship with their inner experiences. By engaging in focusing, individuals learn to be present with themselves in a new and profound way. They come to realize that their experiences, no matter how challenging, do not define them. Rather, these experiences are merely sensations and emotions that can be acknowledged and embraced. Through focusing, individuals gain access to a deep sense of self-love and trust, cultivating a quiet confidence that permeates their lives.

Focusing is a powerful technique that allows us to truly listen to ourselves and others, leading to a more present and authentic way of living. This practice can be used in various settings, such as part of psychotherapy, Bodywork, Art therapy or simply connecting with our inner selves. By engaging in this deep exploration, we can uncover hidden insights and find unexpected solutions to our challenges. Focusing is a gentle and secure approach, ensuring our emotional well-being throughout the process. It enables us to delve into our inner world and discover the wisdom that resides within us. This transformative practice holds the potential to bring about profound change and a greater sense of fulfillment in our lives.
Focusing, a therapeutic technique developed in the 1960s and 1970s, originated from the research conducted by Dr. Eugene Gendlin. By studying both patients and therapists, Gendlin sought to uncover the key factors that led to successful outcomes in therapy. Surprisingly, he found that the technique employed by the therapist was not the determining factor. Instead, Gendlin discovered that the patients' ability to connect with their own experiences during therapy sessions made a significant difference. Through his extensive research, Gendlin identified steps that successful patients were already utilizing, which he named "Focusing"
All four class sessions will incorporate a hands-on approach to learning by starting with a group experiential practice of a focusing session or providing an experience related to focusing. This interactive method is considered the most effective way to grasp the concepts and will be followed by informative discussions on theory and technique. Additionally, there will be live demonstrations of one-on-one focusing sessions involving class participants.
